Reading colonial encounter and indigenization of Islamic culture in Fathul Mubeen
Abstract
 
Mappila community had become unavoidable part of Kerala population. Through them Arabic language and literature gained a crucial role in the history of Kerala literature. While the colonialist powers invaded

Kerala, the religious scholars used the vibrancy of Arabic language among the Mappilas, to organize anti colonial struggles and maintain the community. Thus the Arabic language and literature had acquired a wide recognition and acceptability among Mappilas. Even it judged that, to learn Englsih, as a language of colonialists, discrepant to a Muslim. It lead the Muslim religious scholars to use the Arabic language and literature as an anti colonialist medium. Qazi Muhammed, the author of the text Fath ul Mubeen, took such a role among Mappila community by inspiring Mappilas against the colonial domination. The ideology of revolution against such marginalization flourished through Arabic language. Because the religion had a role of catalyst in precipitating the Mappila out breaks. Furthermore the work is an example for the indigenization of Islam promoting a secular and harmonious outlook. It encouraged a peaceful co existence of different communities. Bu the abnegation of the elitist historiography ignored such literature and the history of such efforts lie unknown. It marginalized the Arabic literature in Kerala.

Al Fath ul Mubeen which the anti colonial Arabic poem works is written between 1578 and 1579. Abdul Qadar Fal fari was the first to publish the primary text of Fath ul Mubeen in his Anthology of Poems named as Jawahir ul Ash`ar. The hand written copy of Al fath ul Mubeen is kept in Indian office library which is situated in London. The number of the work is Mss under or No 1044, section, NO.vi. Folio 152+173. The poem deals with the historical war of Chaliyam between Portuguese and the king Zamorine which occurred in 1570.

The paper reads the anti colonial impact which is made by the work Fath ul Mubeen. It interprets the inspiration and instigation which placed by the poem in a multi cultural society.
