TRADITION OF DISSENT: ZOOMING IN ON SHANTARAM MOVIES

Schools of study in any Age have always been receptive to the major trends in society. Seldom have scholars ventured upon a scrutiny of the dissenting factions in society, be it in the genre of art or literature. It is only lately that scholastic perusal has turned toward the divergent trends that existed in society since time immemorial.
V. Shantaram, the famous Marathi film maker has always been a dissenter, both in the story line he filmed and the technical innovations that he made use of, while filming. My paper Ttradition of dissent: zooming in on shantaram movies focuses on the story aspect as it was very different from any of the other film makers of his times. A man who dared to be a dissenter in almost every movie he filmed.
I would like to focus on seven films, a short description of the story line, something about the cast, its peculiarities and why it is different from its contemporary movies. Time permitting I would like to screen a few clippings too.
A short area for the female characters will also be included in my paper.
The layout of the paper will be as follows:
  • Definition of dissent as seen in films
  • Life of V. Shantaram
  • The seven films
  • Relation to today’s cinema
  • Repose
