DESIRES OF DISSENT IN 22 FEMALE KOTTAYAM
Abstract
Diverting from the traditions of Azhakulla Celina and Achanurangatha Veedu, Aashiq Abu’s 22 Female Kottayam has come as a fresh breeze to the new generation Malayalam film industry. A rape victim who does not consider herself impure or who does not make an attempt to jump from a ten-storey building is both welcoming and relieving. Voicing its dissent to the epitomes of Sati, Sita and Savithri, it takes us to the other side of woman, the SHE – the frightening White Goddess of Rider Haggard.
Along with these, the movie also manipulatively commercialises feminist thought. Is it necessary to embrace the crude mannerisms of the West, to deviate from the main stream? So the women here curses, pass lewd remarks, wear miniskirt, and happily sleeps with bosses to migrate to Canada. It is disturbing that Tessa, the heroine is always willing to surrender to achieve her ends. Her body, it is shown, as her only strength when it comes to overpowering men – their lust must be their only weakness. In this paper I propose to analyse how the desires of dissent shaped the movie and how far it has fulfilled or overstretched it.
