Abstract 125. Prof. Kishori Nayak K
The Tradition of Dissent in Indian Women’s Autobiographies
Any attempt to trace the assertion of a female selfhood would need to deal with the utilisation of various kinds of spaces to revolt against patriarchal restrictions. The question of female agency in subverting stereotypes of the feminine such as the loving mother or the self-effacing wife or the desirable female body comes to the fore in feminist literature whose meanings could be combative or radical, and yet be couched in palatable language. The proposed paper intends to examine the use of silences, dissonances, polyphony and flux as strategy in the autobiographies of women from the subcontinent, whether originally written in English or available in English translation.
