Tradition and Revolt in the selected novels of Shashi Deshpande
Abstract

The entire oeuvre of the celebrated novelist, Shashi Deshpande presents the dilemma that confronts the urban educated woman of India. It covers the various junctions of life where traditionally defined role of a woman and her individual aspirations are at crossroads. The novels of Deshpande revolve around this transitional phase where the older generation of women conforms to the traditional role but the protagonists who are young, educated, intelligent and sensitive question such norms. After much thought and introspection they choose a life of fulfillment over social conformity. This revolt from the traditional role and image is a common thread that forms the crux of Shashi Deshpande’s writing. This paper aims to study Deshpande’s depiction of tradition and revolt in the life of present Indian woman and also the myriad ways in which woman has been subjugated in the name of tradition. The paper also aims to study not just the cause of the revolt but also the aftermath. It intends to investigate whether the break from tradition delineated in Shashi Deshpande’s work disturbs the age old patriarchal social order.
