The Predicament of the “Other” and the voice of protest in “Abhiyatri” by Nirupama Borgohain
Abhiyatri truly brings about the
position of the womenfolk in India. The protagonist chandraprabha’s life is depicted by Nirupama Borgohain from
her childhood to her youth, till the time she dies. The novel presents before
us the constant struggle of the women against their incessant exploitation,
torture and struggle which they undergo because to the male dominated
conservative framework. Discrimination has been the greatest happening process
which has always been a blood sucking leech to the Indian society. Deprivation
with women and Dalits are almost same, both are suffering, the condition of Dalit
women are worst because they undergo double-bind operation. This paper will look
into the matters which are directly related to gender discrimination and women
suffering, the protagonist emerged from the misty obscurity of a remote
Assamese village to register many triumphs for the oppressed and the
victimized, including persecuted women life herself. As the author shows, this
gusty character was humanised by her frailties, contradictions and desires. By
plunging into the narrative the reader sees how Chandraprabha transcends her
personal grief-especially a frustrated love affair and the burden of being a single mother-to become a significant
presence in the socio-political landscape of Assam.
