Chandal Jiban, A Dissent against Bhadrolok Voice
Chandal Jiban, By Manoranjan Byapari, is one of the
first dalit novels of Bengal with the consciousness of Dalitness have been
introduced in the literary and political sphere. The novel has portrayed the
post partition effect with the caste problem and story of oppression of a
community (Chandal). The narrative has been connected with the political
culture and the Bhadrolok cultural penetration in the political repertoire. He
has a strong voice of dissent against Bhadrolok culture and he explores the
voices of Dalit in his different articles and creative writings. He has
contextualized the oppression of Dalit in the context of Bengal’s political
repertoire and with the long tradition left politics. The narrative includes
the critique of right and left both the political attitudes. The
paper will define the Bhadrolok, not as the class but as the attitude of the
people which have differences and which is very much context specific and
variable. The paper will bring the complexities of the term Bhadrolok and will
show how the Bhadrolok attitude is hegemonic and partially involved in
oppressions. Bhadrolok is a circle of classes also, which can be differentiated
as margin and mainstream and involves the representation of mainstream culture
to raise its voice. The reading of the novel is also the reading of the
evolvement and contemporary attitude of the Bhadrolok and then the dissent of
the Dalit in the context of Bengal.
