Mocking the Gay – Politics of Heterosexual Discourse in Hindi Films

Cinema by now in the 21st century has attained some measure of cultural respectability and responsibility. Film/Cinema being one of the important elements of popular culture is more or less responsible for the formation and circulation of various cultural discourses in society. Films have not just remained as a source of entertainment today. Films are used as a strong tool for representing religious, class, political and gender ideologies. So it is of greater importance today to look at this social genre that is ‘Film’ used as a tool for various cultural discourses. The issue of Gay identity and Gay relationship is one of the recurrent themes in most of the popular Hindi (Bollywood) films in recent days. My paper looks into the issues of Gay identity and Gay relationship in Hindi films and rises an important question that is, What kind of representation about Gay relationships and identities are made in Hindi films. Gay relationships and identities are treated as topics of mockery and comedy in Hindi films. The way in which these Hindi films portraying Gays is that people are made to think that Gays and Gay relationship is just to be looked and laughed at. My paper throws light on the way in which Gays and Gay relationships are represented as comic part of the narrative and try to show that issues regarding Gay identity were not given any importance. Through the examples of selected Hindi films this paper will explain how the Hegemonic Discourse of Heterosexual norm is circulated in Hindi films by treating the issue of Gay identity and relationship as part of the comedy. Such mocking and comic representation of Gay identity and relationship needs to be questioned and my paper raise such questions.
